Daughter-in-law's Diary - Episode 03 : The soup made for the mother-in-law and other stories

Image
1st Paragraph : Description of the gift Ever since last night's supermarket match, my mother-in-law had locked herself in her room. Early in the morning, I woke up suddenly to a loud noise coming from the kitchen. When I checked, the time was 5:30 AM. It looked like my mother-in-law had stepped onto the ground quite early today! 😮 When I rushed to the kitchen, there she was, having cooked red raw rice and scraping coconut to make pol sambol. As soon as she saw me, putting on a face like someone who had just risen from a sickbed, she said, "I don't know, dear, my stomach is burning, probably from that fried rice we bought from outside last night” “In our days, we ate rice for breakfast. But for the kids of this era, if they make a piece of bread or something sweet for breakfast, they think they are done” “That's why, without thinking about my exhaustion, I cooked some rice this morning," giving me a grand opening for her 'innings'. 🏏 Suppressed my l...

Daughter-in-law's Diary - Episode 02 : Mother-in-law observing Sil and ather stories

Image
° 1st paragraph : In the morning, mother-in-law got her white sil clothes ready and prepared to go to the temple. Before leaving, she walked up to me and said in a very serene voice, "Daughter, I thought of going to the temple today to invoke blessings on you and son, and also to perform a Bodhi Pooja. Take care of the household chores and stay safe." It made me feel like she hadn't spoken to me with this much affection even on our wedding day! 😇 But the moment she returned from the temple in the evening, all that calm and saintly demeanor was gone. Marching straight into the kitchen while still in her sil clothes, she stared at the food I cooked as if it were a raid by the ‘CID’ "I don't know, daughter... at the temple, Piyasili told me that on the days she observes sil” “her daughter-in-law wakes up early in the morning and prepares an ambul thiyal (fish curry), a chicken curry, and even a watalappan to make up for the missed meals” I was just looking at our...

Daughter-in-law's Diary - Episode 01 : Mother-in-law's amazing coconut roti

Image
° 1st Paragraph I woke up. But I didn't get out of bed. Since today is a holiday, just as I was thinking of sleeping a bit longer, a grand symphony of pots and pans clatterin ‘dadas.. bidas..’ started coming from the kitchen. My mother-in-law was awake, and from the sound, it was clear that a huge pot had just hit the floor. To me, that noise sounded exactly like, "Wake.Up.Already.Daughter-in-law!" 😂 Having no escape, I got out of bed. I heard my husband walking into the kitchen. I peeked quietly from behind the door curtain. With a look of ultimate selflessness on her face, my mother-in-law was telling him, "Oh son.. don't wake up your wife, she must be tired. I made some coconut roti." (Looking at those rotis, I felt they were sturdy enough to build house walls with.) 😏 I was cooking dhal for lunch. Suddenly, my mother-in-law materialized right behind me out of nowhere, like a scene from a horror movie, and said, "Oh dear, don't people temp...
